Considering a career in the kitchen? We urge you to come and get a taste of the 1000 Hills Chef School. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be the next great culinary artist, say “Yes, Chef!” Our school, set in the beautiful rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal, is rated one of South Africa’s top culinary institutions and we are winners of numerous awards.
We are driven by passion and hard work, and dedicated to learning through practical hands-on training – we say “Kitchens not classrooms!” Our students sharpen their skills in our on-site restaurant, learning both culinary and applied management skills in a real-world environment.
1000 Hills Chef School was established in 2004 when our founder, Chef Dixi, chose to invest her considerable expertise in South Africa instead of accepting an offer to teach in Italy. She established the practical and disciplined teaching model we use, one that takes into account the passionate and creative personalities that are drawn to this career. Our Principal, Chef Jade, is herself a graduate of the school who has been mentored to lead our top team and take the school to new heights. Meet our team here
In 2016, Trevor and Desiree Maarschalk bought the school when Chef Dixi chose to retire. Driven by the same passion to invest in South Africa’s youth, this Hillcrest family saw the opportunity to grow the school’s reach and build on an excellent reputation in culinary education. Their innovative and personal approach ensures students are nurtured and supported in becoming the leading chefs of tomorrow.
