Young Pastry Chef Sbusi takes the cake, and the win

Each year, Huletts hosts the auspicious Sweet Young Chef competition, for students aged 18 to 30 years. Chef schools from around the country enter their top students in the hope that they will take home the victory for their school. And this year, we are proud to report that 1000 Hills Chef School second-year student Sbusi Ngcobo, and aspiring pastry chef, took the title. It’s our second win of this prestigious competition.

Huletts Sweet Young Chef 2019

The entries

The criteria for entering is the submission of an impressive dessert showcasing the endless possibilities of baking and cooking with the Huletts range of products. The dessert should show technique and plating proficiency, and of course, be delicious! Judging takes place after submissions have closed and one student from each school (four in total) earns the chance to compete in the finals. And this year, our very own Sbusi got through!

The finals

The finals of the Huletts Sweet Young Chef competition takes place in Pretoria at the annual Info Chef event. Here, the top four contestants have three hours to recreate their dishes in front of an audience and a panel of judges. Students not only get judged on their technique and the taste of their dishes, but on the cleanliness of their work stations too.

Sbusi’s winning dessert

Sbusi made a coconut panna cotta with mango mousse, pineapple and coconut salsa, dragon fruit jelly, pistachio nut crumble, and honeycomb. An elegant combination of flavours that we applaud her on! Sbusi was awarded a lovely cash prize for herself, and crowned Huletts Sweet Young Chef 2019. And 1000 Hills Chef School won a generous hamper of Huletts products – something our students will definitely put to good use. Well done, Sbusi, keep up this excellent standard of cooking, and before you know if you’ll be a professional pastry chef!
